PLEDGE TO GO WASTE-FREE!
FACT: Each Canadian produces on average 835 kilograms of waste per year, which is the highest waste production per capita in North America and Europe.
Why don’t you think about going waste free for a week?
To get in the spirit of RecycleMania, the Office of Campus Sustainability and the SFUO Sustainable Development Centre are running a waste-free pledge contest. You can choose to go waste-free for a minimum of one week, up to the full eight weeks of RecycleMania (February 5 to March 31, 2012). At the end of the contest, there will be a draw for gift certificates worth $50 or $100 for the restaurant or organic food store of your choice (for those who pledged only).
GENERAL RULES
Each participant must complete a minimum of one week, up to a maximum of two months (throughout RecycleMania – from February 5 to March 31 2012) of living waste-free*.
Each participant must write and submit a minimum of one blog entry before the deadline of March 31st 2012. The blog must be about their efforts, purchases, opinions or anything else related to their ‘living waste-free’ experience during RecycleMania 2012.
It is recommended, but not compulsory, to reduce overall consumption of recyclable containers, wrappers, etc.
All pledge submissions must be received prior to the start of the pledge period. If your pledge is late, you will be disqualified from the contest.
ELIGIBILITY
The participant must be a student registered at the University of Ottawa during the period of RecycleMania 2012.
RESULTS
Contest winners will be named on Monday April 2, 2012.
*Living waste-free is defined as living without purchasing or producing items that will end up in a landfill. Recyclables are excluded from this rule. Depending on where you live, recyclable can have different meanings; on campus you can recycle all forms of plastic, whereas in your home you can only recycle certain types of plastic.
